If you’ve browsed our E-Liquid range, you’ve probably noticed bottles labelled either "salt nic" or standard e-liquid, often in different bottle sizes and nicotine strengths. The difference matters more than most new vapers expect — picking the wrong one for your device is the most common reason people say an e-liquid "doesn’t feel right."
The Core Difference
Both are nicotine dissolved in a PG/VG (propylene glycol / vegetable glycerin) base with flavouring — the difference is the chemical form of the nicotine itself.
Freebase nicotine is the traditional form used in e-liquids for years. It’s stronger-hitting on the throat at higher strengths, which is why freebase e-liquids are usually sold at lower nicotine levels (3mg–12mg) — anything higher becomes harsh to inhale in a sub-ohm or direct-lung device.
Salt nicotine (nicotine salt) is chemically modified to be smoother at higher concentrations. This lets manufacturers sell it at 20mg–50mg nicotine without the harsh throat hit freebase would have at that strength — which is exactly why salt nic exists: to satisfy nicotine cravings faster, with fewer puffs, in a smaller device.
Which One Works With Your Device
This is the part that actually matters for your purchase:
- Pod systems and low-wattage devices (most of what we stock under Pod Systems (Devices)) are built for salt nicotine. Their coils are designed for the tighter, mouth-to-lung draw that suits salt nic’s smoothness at higher strength.
- Sub-ohm tanks and higher-wattage mods are built for freebase e-liquid at lower strengths, producing bigger clouds with a more open, direct-lung draw.
Using freebase at high strength in a sub-ohm tank is harsh. Using salt nic in a sub-ohm tank at high wattage can deliver far more nicotine per puff than intended. Matching the two is what makes the experience smooth.
Quick Reference
| Freebase | Salt Nicotine | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical strength | 3mg–12mg | 20mg–50mg |
| Throat hit at high strength | Harsh | Smooth |
| Best device type | Sub-ohm / direct-lung | Pod system / mouth-to-lung |
| Best for | Cloud chasers, flavour-focused vaping | Quick nicotine satisfaction, ex-smokers |
| Nicotine delivery speed | Slower | Faster, closer to a cigarette |
Not Sure Which You Have?
If your device is small, pocket-sized, and draws tightly (similar to pulling on a straw), it’s almost certainly built for salt nicotine. If it’s larger, uses a bigger tank, and draws more openly, it’s built for freebase. If in doubt, message us on WhatsApp with your device name and we’ll tell you directly — using the wrong type won’t damage the device, but it will feel wrong, and that’s usually what sends new vapers back to cigarettes unnecessarily.
All e-liquids sold at Emirates Vape are ESMA-approved and for adults 18+ only.
